Introduction to Colorwork Knitting with Gotland Yarn: The Snowy Peaks Hat

$90.00
Sold Out

Taught by Sarah Solomon, hosted by Six Dutchess Farm

Discover the beauty and simplicity of working with two colors of Gotland Yarn and open up whole new vistas for your knitting.

In this class we use a two-color hat pattern to learn all of the essentials of knitting colorwork including different methods for handling two yarns at a time, understanding colorwork gauge, trapping the wool, color dominance, and how to follow colorwork charts. We’ll also learn about the special qualities and nuances of breed-specific farm yarn from the Gotland flocks at Six Dutchess Farm and AppleTree Farm. Digital pattern included!

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • 2 contrasting colors of DK/light worsted weight Gotland yarn

  • 16” circular needles in size US 5 and 7

  • Double-pointed needles in size US 7

  • Stitch markers

  • Blunt tapestry needle

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Basic knitting skills, should be comfortable knitting in the round on circular and double-pointed needles.

HOMEWORK:

In order to cover as much material in class as possible, it is helpful for you to come to class with the hat already started. You will be provided with the Snowy Peaks pattern before class. The hat comes in 3 sizes and you can use any size you like, but if you don’t have a specific need for the hat in mind it is recommended to knit the size Medium as that will fit most people. You will work the ribbing, the increase round and the directed number of plain rounds before we meet for class. In the pattern this means you will follow the directions for your size up until the pattern says “All Sizes” on page 3 at which point you are instructed to begin the colorwork knitting. This is where we will begin in class.

We ask that all participants use Gotland yarn for this class, as we'll exploring the unique qualities and demands of this special fiber.

When the colors and textures on the farm are like a Monet painting. Welcome, Astilbe. We’ve been working on this color-block shaded area for quite some time, and, this year, it’s finally come into its own. #momentslikethis #farmlife #asti
